Touristic Salt Mine

Enter the depths and live the spectacle. Walk on the magical land in the depths of Transylvania.

Now, underground, but several millions of years ago, under water. As in Prehistoric times, millions of years ago, Transylvania was covered by an immense sea. The present Transylvanian Basin is a sedimentary basin that was formed through a slow and continuous sinking, thus creating a continental type of sea. Millions of years later, the waters evaporated and left behind an impressive layer of salt, which spreads across the entire subsoil of Transylvania, with an average thickness of about 400 m. So, the salt from Turda Salt Mine dates back to prehistory, a treasure left behind by time.

A mixture of history and modernity, Turda Salt Mine is an unforgettable experience, a space where legend meets history. Inside the Salt Mine, the wood that the Stairway of the Rich is made of, the one that the Austrian emperors walked on during the Austro– Hungarian Empire, is a special one, made of fir tree, especially to withstand well in special environments. Also, as a unique and interesting fact in the world, the only “crivac” (or horse mill: extraction machine) still in its place, in its original state, in a salt mine that has become accessible to tourists, is the Crivac from Turda Salt Mine. And Rudolf Mine completes the experience at Turda Salt Mine with a series of fun activities for the little ones and the big ones – a generous amphitheatre hosting shows of all kinds, sports fields, bowling, mini-golf, billiards, and many other activities. The panoramic wheel is also unique, as it is probably the only underground panoramic wheel in the world. A boat ride on Theresa Mine lake is also part of the charm of the Turda Salt Mine.
